As a puppy he was always good,

as a young dog better still.

And I daresay he was ‘middle-o’-the-road’

in the days he was ‘over the hill’.

He could beg, he could roll over,

and he strictly obeyed my laws.

He could ‘speak up’ or show submission,

with his head tucked between his paws.

If I held a stick out yonder,

he would leap it at my commands.

From the ditch at a “here boy!” call from me

he would bound right into my hands.

When the cows were needed I’d only to say

“Go fetch them, my loyal and true”.

Obedient, joyful, away he would scurry,

to lead them with no more ado.
